The story’s ending, in typical Ms Wurts’ way, is not what I thought it would be.. is it the ending or another beginning? I saw the author’s comments that she would like to return to this world, and there is indeed a lot left to describe. But for now, let’s look at this third instalment in an excellent series.
The Kielmark takes up a much bigger role to solve the final issues facing Keithland, and in this we see other sides to his character. Corley continues a bigger role, much like in the previous book, and the reader gets a very thorough look into what makes him tick.
But for the four main characters: Maelgrim’s fate game to me as a surprise; Taen’s journey was more or less as I expected; Anskiere’s much the same; and Jaric’s perhaps the most nuanced. In some ways, Anskiere loses much of the halo that surrounded him, while the reader sees the other side of the prince that was introduced in the second book. But with so many other more powerful sorcerers about, Taen is set back from the rest, which for me was a regret.
Overall, however, I liked the third book, probably more so than the second one, and I liked the series overall too!
